I think that just the fact that you were able to ask that question and get so many varied answers from people that you didn't know before from all around the world shows that the internet has the great potential to be the greatest tool in the evolution of society and communication.
It is the people that use this power for the dark side, and that potential is there in all cases, not just in use of the internet.

I fail to understand things from a good or bad perspective. I've never been able to, because I'm gifted with the unusal ability to see in true colour of thought while the majority are walking around seeing the world in greyscale or less. The occasional greyscale person will come out in a coversation like this and say they see the good in the bad, and the bad in the good, and some aspects are somewhere in between, as if the factors of life could be graded on a linear chart based on how beneficial they are the person X. Life is not like that! it's far more complicated and intricate, so you can completely disregard the idea that something is definitively polar (black or white) by judgement. It's ludicrous.
To answer your question, the internet is not only a tool, as one answerer implied. It's a communal medium of exchange and communication (as we are doing here), it's a information sharing resource (not just a tap, but a multi-directional middleground), it's a level of global government that has infinite ability to monitor and record events in real time (like the world cup broadcast, or UN sanction enforcement in third world countries). None of these things are good or bad. They just are, and your personal interpretation of the events, and your attitudinal personaility are what define your judgements and response to the stimuli of such information. STOP IT NOW. decide instead to have an open mind about such events, and how they affect you, and then consciously decide what kind of response you choose for the world to see you enact. In the words of Ghandi, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." The space between stimulus and response is choice, and it will always be there for you, always! Blessed be.

I think the Internet is just like any other media we use to communicate. It can be used for a useful purpose or not. It depends on the person who uses it.
I think it's great because it allows the world to be open at your fingertips. You can search, learn, communicate, share-everything and anything. It is something taken for granted and to those who do not wish to see knowledge, a place to kill time and search porn.
The negatives are that it is an open platform. I mean, a kid could log on to any adult site without too much problems. Sex offenders can hide in places and catch innocent people unaware. This is a serious concern but can be remedied by learning simple guidelines.
For the most part, a world without the net, just wouldn't be as good. As I said earlier, it opens up a world to many that may not been accessible only a decade ago.

The Internet is a tool, if it is used as a learning, communicative tool then it is educational, therefore good. The Internet is an inanimate object, it has no dark side except when the people that are abusing it show up. It can also be addictive like slots machines. A big time waster if you allow it. Finally, it is up to the users of the Internet to deem it good or bad for us. All things in moderation!

Right now, its more or less even steven in terms of the Internet being a good as well as a bad outlet for the world.
Good because the barriers that used to hound radio and television stations are now lifted because of the Internet's "borderless" nature. Matter of fact, my dream to listen live to an American radio station from across the Pacific was realized when the Internet came around.
Bad, because of the Internet's borderless nature, anything, including the naked body can be shown. It was more dangerous in fact for children who are not supervised by their parents. I heard of a six year old boy who already saw a naked female body through the Internet. He kept asking: why are there hairs on the urinating area while he doesn't have it? It sounds funny, but it also sound too gross.

yes the world is better off with the Internet because if we didn't have it the world would not be so industrialised and we couldn't share information as readily to all the people who could use it. as for the dark side it depends on how the person uses the Internet do they misuse it of use it to the benefit of the goodness in them.

The ability to access so much knowledge, and for people to connect and communicate so freely is a great thing. It's been such a boon to the world of commerce, and for broadcasting news.
However, it has also found corruption, fraud, and deceit, and been the tool of many to spread it.
I don't know if the good outweighs the bad, but I feel it has had a positive impact on my life.

I grew up in Apartheid South Africa. The government controlled the flow of information. Newspapers were censored, books were banned and post was intercepted.
The current ANC government is also trying to control the flow of information. However with the Internet it is harder for them to get it right.
So I would definitely say that the world is better off with the Internet.

Since man has started inventing things , there is always someone who discovers the bad use of it.
--> books - prono is there
--> music - there is someone using curse words or demeaning someone.
--> phone - voila! there is now phone sex.. and now cellphones too are being used.
So what do we do? Internet too is like one of above. We can find zillion good uses but there is always someone who knows how toscrew it up.
is it that bad? That all depends on us. Every individual person has to decide for himself. If heavy cencorship is bought about...it will only have reverse effect and liek always we just love to know the banned things.
So if someone doesnt approve something..switch it off. talk to children the reason for doing so.
We cannot close donw internet but what we can do it take matter seriously, get involved to decided how to make a better use of it without crossing limits.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
and yes on other hand...no internet would mean no job for me...lol am a web designer:)
