Whether umpire or referee -the decisions are referred for judgement Their job is the same .However in cricket and tennis the umpires stand or sit in the same place .A referee is running along with the players to the place of action ???

in tennis, umpire is the chair umpire who has a referee as his/her superior. this is usually a practice in a tennis tournament, not in recreational matches. final words of the match is on the chair umpire whilst the referee deals with other issues like drawings or seedings.
in football/soccer, the (chief) umpire is simultaneously the referee and he/she has two line umpires to help (for offside, violations, etc). so since he/she doesn't have a superior, the umpire becomes the referee.
in general, a referee is a person whom the umpire referred to.

maybe because the chair umpire and the line umpires at tennis don't move on the pitch, a referee runs along the pitch to see what happens, maybe this is the difference between them.

In football the official staff consists of a referee, an umpire, a head linesman, a line judge, a field judge, a side judge, and a back judge. so there are umpires in both.

An umpire decides if a ball is in or out, fair or foul, if a player in baseball is safe or out. A referee makes calls based on fouls (eg: in soccer/futbol, football, hockey, etc, referees call fouls and penalties).
