Libero is "sweeper" in Italian.
When Franz Beckenbauer was playing, soccer teams had a man in front of the goalkeeper without any duty of "marking" opponents (free = libero).
Usually until the 90s, teams use to play with a defense organized with: goalkeeper, sweeper, left-back, right-back, stopper (4 men defense)

Libero is Italian for "Free". Beckenbauer is a german football player and in italian football the position of sweeper is referred to as libero.
The sweeper is a more versatile type of centre back that "sweeps up" the ball if the opponent manages to breach the defensive line. Their position is rather more fluid than other defenders who man-mark their designated opponents. Because of this, the position is often referred to as libero.
