Honestly, what would make someone say something cruel to a person they barely know?

If you are referring to how people treat each other online, you answered your own question: because they don't know the person! People think that since they don't know someone, they don't have to follow the common behavioral decencies they would afford someone they were talking to face to face. They can be rude, nasty and cruel because they know that the other person will never know who they are. It is sad that they can't treat others with the same respect that they would like to receive. Such a sad commentary on the nature of some people.

well, a person may be mean to someone they barely know, because this person that they barely know may have been rude to them first. Or maybe not. There are a lot of people out there who just think that they are superior to the rest. Then there are the ******* who get their kicks out of being rude! All in all, when people are rude, be rude too. Most often than not, those rude people are just pussys who need to be taught a lesson in respect to others.

Possibly their "victim" or target deserved it. Whining, fishing for compliments, contradicting themselves, insulting a particular race all instigate insults. In a way, they brought it upon themselves.
But what about the really or so the people Y!A label them, "lifeless" spitfires? Blame it on a bad day, an irritating Y!A participant, bad blood, there are so many possibilities, rather than limiting them to "insecure", "jealous", or "stupid".

Well some people have problems of their own, and there job is to dump it off on everyone else. Tell them to get a life.

cause you just see the negative side of them how ever you can ask " why are rare of people so good?.
Incase of being so good with the people you barley know or being rode with them,,,,you might hear the opposite of what you expect, if they do so, just be good with them.
Sometime You don't even know your self and how to react, so you don't with the people.
