There are 2 main schools of Buddhism : Theravada & Mahayana.
The core teaching of both these schools is the same and it is based on mindfulness, meditation or awareness. The method of practice and rituals only differ to some degree between the 2 schools. The distribution is as follows:
Theravada : Sri Lanka, Thailand, Burma, Laos and Cambodia
Mahayana: Tibet, Japan, Vietnam, China, Nepal etc.
Both forms of these schools are found in most developed countries in the world such as US, UK, European countries, Australia (recently it was announced that the fastest growing religion in Australia is Buddhism) etc
Buddhism offers a doctrine that appeals to a thinking and inquring mind. The doctrine (which is pretty deep) is very scientific and is TIMELESS as stated by the Buddha himself. It is so because it applies to all times irrespective of human advancement and worldly changes. Also the Buddha declared that 'accept what I say, upon testing it and only when your intelligence is able to see the truth of it'
There is great kinship between the two schools of Buddhism.

There is no really association, but history states it starts from India, with Buddha ÅÄkyamuni (SiddhÄrtha Gautama), lived in the 5th century BCE. and his disciples. Then of course, the the rest is the two school of thoughts. See the link below it is quite comprehensive.
