The playmaker usually occupies the midfield position. He is the one the initiate the attacks or pull the team back for a defensive formation. The playmaker will need to be creative and experience enough to read the game and spot opportunities. For example, seeing a packed defence of the opponent, he will initiate attacks via long ball or the two wings to pull the defence apart. So ultimately, the playmaker is usually not the one that scores the goal, but the one that creates the opportunity for one. One good example will be England's Beckham. He's got a really good read of the game and do super accurate passes.
