I never knew/heard of water being so harmful for babies in my life.
My baby's doc did tell me that my daughter didn't need water cause she would get all she needs from my breastmilk but she never said to not give her water or that it could be deadly. I have been letting my daughter drink water for about a month...she is 5 months old granted she doesn't drink alot but she does drink it and she likes it...and she seems fine to me I haven't had any problems. Any other mom's give their babies water??

You will get so much contradicting advice on everything involving babies. That's a fact. A baby could need water if the weather if hot or if he is ill. Also, to wash down solids once you have started them. Give your baby just a little at a time. No more than a couple of ounces a day at that aeg. Use your instincts. you most certainly have good ones or you wouldn't be questioning your doctor!!

A little water in moderation is fine. My son's pediatrician actually recommended a half water half juice mixture for him because he was having stomach troubles and he's only 3 months old. Like one of the other answers said filtered is best though. During a pregnancy class I took they said Fluoride in the water is harmful to babies, but if you have a water filter it filters out fluoride. The fluoride is harmful in large amounts and that's also why they recommend not letting toddlers use toothpaste. It doesn't sound like your daughter is drinking gallons of water a day, so I would say don't worry about it. If your daughter had a problem with the water I'm sure she would have been showing signs by now.

I too have never heard of it being deadly!? That sounds a little strange. I gave my 4 month old sips from a glass the other day. The concern is probably more about nutrition. If babies are drinking water, they may not be getting as many calories and the fat that they need for brain development. I would suggest letting her have sips in a sippy cup to let her get used to using a cup. But even better would be to put breastmilk in the cup. God Bless

I've given both my kids (now 27 months and 11 months old, respectively) water when they were younger, and they lived to tell about it. I looked at it this way...true, they get all the nutrition they need from their formula/breast milk, but what if they get thirsty between bottles or nursings? I get thirsty more than every 3 hours, so why wouldn't they? I think doctors say no water because of dumb parents who replace formula with water, potentially causing their baby to be malnourished. A few ounces of water here and there won't harm them unless you notice your baby filling up on it and not eating.

I just became a grandmother and my daughters doc said there a possibility of water intoxication, which can be harmful to infants. If you like and trust your doctor then follow his advice if not find another doctor. I had 4 kids and only gave them water (with a spoonful of sugar or a ounce of applejuice) when they were sick. I would look up water intoxication on the computer to evulate the risks. Good Luck, Babies should come with directions!

No, it's not wise to give a baby this young water. Breast milk is about 90% water and is the only food/drink your baby should have at this time. Your daughter's tummys TINY, and even a little water can make her feel full without giving her any calories, fat, or nutrition to grow. Hold off on water until around 9 months.

The human body is composed of mostly water. With out it you will dehydrate. I have always given by baby's water. The doctors and the WIC will tell you they don't need it but they do. If she likes the water don't stop giving it to her. Use bottled water. Formula is just as important for the nutrient's but don't stop giving the baby water.
Hope that helps

Go ahead, and continue to give your baby water because my daughter loves water now, and today she is 11 and do not like juice some soda but very rarely she ever gets it. But, I never heard of a doctor telling a parent that does not give their child water , you might need to change your baby's doctor.

Breastfed babies should *not* get water until after they start solids. Giving *anything* but human milk changes the digestive tract of the baby, potential risking her health. But even babies fed formula don't need water. Giving a baby something she/he doesn't need means taking away something she/he *does* need. If a baby's stomach is filled with water, she/he won't want *food* that she/he needs for growth and development. For these reasons *any* water is bad for young babies.
