The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists strongly recommends all pregnant women get screened for this condition between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy

the test is really quite simple. you just have to drink a very sweet liquid and then they draw some blood from your arm after your body has had a chance to digest some of the sugar from that drink. it is not dependent upon whether or not you have a family history of diabetes, but the way your body reacts to pregnancy. case in point...both my parents and 3 out of 4 grandparents were diabetic, but in 7 pregnancies between the 2 of us, my sister and i have never had any issues with gestational diabetes, but my sister-in-law, with no family history of diabetes has had it with all 3 of her pregnancies. it really is better to be safe than sorry, have the test done and try to prevent the stress of gestational diabetes on you and your unborn baby.
