I'm considering the depo shot. What are the pros and cons. Also where do they give the shot? Does it hurt? (be honest)

PLEASE do not use this form of birth control! It is very dangerous and being taken off the market. Everyone I know who has used it has gained between 30 and 60 pounds.

The pros are that it's easy - you only have to get it done once every 3 months. The cons are too numerous to list. There are so many options out there. Please look at the others!

You may want to consider another method, like the pill (used daily) or Nuvaring (once a month). The reason why is because the Depo shot is being researched, and is close to being taken off the market. With something that affects your body as greatly as birth control, it's important to choose something that's proved to be safe.
Since you were considering the Shot, you may want to look into Nuvaring. It works the same way the Pill does (by releasing steady levels of hormones), but is not something you need to remember daily. Also since Nuvaring is directly inserted, it contains a lower level or hormones than the Pill but is still as effective (98-99%) and the lower level of hormones causes less side effects (recently the Pill has been shown to increase depression and decrease sexual desire).
Also, if you are looking for a long(er) term option you may want to consider an IUD or other device to be inserted. I believe they are effective for 2-10 years and only require the initial insertion. However this option is often more expensive since it is a procedure needed to be performed by a medical expert.
Both the Pill and the Nuvaring are available with a prescription from your doctor or a clinic, such as Planned Parenthood. An IUD most likely would only be from your gynecologist.
So you have a few choices! I hope you find one that will work best for you. If you're planning on having children in the future, I would stay away from the Depo Shot only because it's full effects are not known yet- and that is probably something you wouldn't want to jepordize.

I have a friend who says she once had her period for an entire month when she took the shot. Sounds pretty nasty to me, so I would go with birth control pills. They work great.
