Diesel fuel. Diesel engines have a higher torque output than gasoline engines. Torque is what is needed to pull large and heavy items. This is why most rigs are diesel i.e. 18-wheelers, firetrucks, buses, etc. They are not usually fast, but are geared to be able to handle a lot more weight than a gasoline engine can.

You will find that most newer tow trucks are diesel. The older ones were mainly gas motors.

Could go either way. Diesel is popular but many run on gasoline, especially the smaller ones.
