Fairly bad. They have drawn into Brazil and Croatia. While they may have an outside shot of advancing even the Australians prove a threat with Viduka, Kewell, and a mounted aerial attack. The only positive is their speed. They are fairly short, and that rules out a lot of goals from set pieces, where generally 30% of scoring comes from in international play. However, Croatia have not been very impressive as of late so I could be wrong. But most definitely they will lose to Brazil, and because of that, it ruins their chances, because even if they surprise against Croatia, they draw against a team from the Group of Death (US, Czech, Italy, Ghana). Assuming they finish second, they face the first seed from that group - Italy or the Czech, who will be very difficult for them. I think Japan will have more success setting short term goals, i.e. scoring in every match, and work from there. They should definitely be aggressive with Nakamura and Inamoto though in their first group matches to give themselves a shot at a second round game.
