3am is a good hour, but the ever famous midnight is The Witching Hour. It stands between, a doorway to the next day. It is a good time to read your cards, do a meditative journey, work certain spells or get in touch with someone who has passed if you want to. If you feel you need protection, sleep with frankenscence, salt and or rosemary. You probably don't as anyone stuck here will be working on fixing what they can't leave undone or not aware of you at all.
But this is what I have learned and it may not be the same for all. Opinions differ on almost everything.

The actual witching hour is Midnight, this is a in-between when its neither day nor night. The sprits are out right now and it is easier to communicate with them. The time 3 am according to christianity the time when Jesus died or something like that. It is said that the devil (dont believe in the Devil because im Wiccan) and his followers come out and roam the earth.

3AM is an effective time to work magick because it's very dark, and just about everyone is asleep, so it's easier to commune with the spirits without any psychic interference

There are a couple of dignificant things about 3 am that I know of, perhaps there are also more. One is that it is an hour associated with the turning of tides, and more people die at the turning of tides than at other times. It is also, interestingly, an hour strongly associated with visitations and sightings of those folks commonly known as aliens.

3 is the number of the Goddess who has three forms. Its not evil, but associated with Witches because they worship her and her consort the God.
It is said that things in threes, Three Moon phases, 3 am, etc are things of power.
Have you ever noticed people saying that good or bad things happen in threes?

No, it's not. It's between Midnight & 4 am. You can protect your home simply by envisioning any kind of protection around it, like a wall, bright light, bushes, gates, etc. You can use symbols like crosses, triquetras, etc too.

well at three AM this morning it started snowing and it hasnt snowed this bad here since 40 yrs ago but it was AWESOME. ne way back to your question (:D)um....i think that is a pretty funny thing, ive never heard that one before but hey if its true well they must be good *ghosts* coz i havent had ne probs.
