Sept. 11, 2001 caused the USA to re-evaluate the concept that a few rogue elements were causing trouble that only required a bomb or two to be dropped, and some level of intelliegence.
Now, we recognize that bin Laden and his group are waging a war without borders, and we will take the war to them. The USA also re-evaluted it soft stance or rogue nations that are hostile to the USA and its interests. Iraq fell into this category. And esp. with an outstanding issue of being in violation of UN resolutions, it was kind of easy to re-start a war that really never had a successful conclusion with Hussein kicking out weapons inspectors.
The war will end when terrorist activities have (all but) stopped, that we've infiltrated their groups and have successful raids, etc. and then the war will return to an FBI / CIA police action kind of thing.

First and foremost, sorry about the lost of your friend. I dont think that there are enough Memorial Days to truely honor those lost combat. They should never be forgotten for their sacrifice.
Unfortunately, I have to disagree with you on why this war was started. Saddam Hussein is definitely an insane, evil man that should have been removed from power, but it should have happened years before 9/11.
Honestly, Iraq had little, if anything to do with 9/11. I am by no means a Hussein fan, but the truth is the truth. If you want to make the argument that all nations ruled by dictators, suspected of harboring terrorists, and having weapons of mass destruction should be brought down, then by all means why haven't we attacked Liberia, Iran, etc?
The simple answer is that Iraq was a scapegoat and Bush needed to prove or at least seem like he was seeking justice for the thousands of innocent people that died on 9/11. And there is no doubt that Iraq is rich in oil and are we forgetting that Bush's family is in the oil business?
If we really wanted to punish the terrorists and go after threats to the US than Iraq was much less of a threat than some of these other nations that racing to build nuclear bombs and other WMDs.
For the record I am not a liberal nor conservative. I consider myself an independent.

In the name of God
Hello.
My name is Hossein Gholami from Iran. I guess that your country is USA. I don't know what is your idea about Iraq war but I know what I know. I say you : Not many years ago after 2th world war, USA is first powerful country in world but world has been changed. USA need energy and oil. He decided to comes his power in Asia South West. He make a man named Saddam Hossein. and try to give Iran. But he could not. After times USA thinks that give Iraq instead of Iran and the war is begined. But they have more problems in Iraq. Every one know that USA only make war for oil not demucraci or human law but they lose the game and now they should come back soon before they have more problems.
Thank you for reading and bye.

I am sorry about your friend. The war was created due to people wanting greed and power. Most all wars are from this source. It is unfortuanate that lives are lost however this is the way the world is. The war and all wars are very unnecessary and I believe your friends death is in vain.

It's getting closer. Troops have to stand between the parties cause a civil war there results in really world war 3 & much worse than 9/11 for us. It was an all or nothing prospect when we started & it'll end when we finish. I know it's hard, I've lost several friends myself, but you have to persevere.
