*Pleasure. Children learn very quickly that it feels good to masturbate.
*Self-soothing. For many children, masturbation reduces tension. These children may masturbate when they are upset, tired, bored, or feeling stress.
*Exploration. Many children will masturbate as part of the natural curiosity they have about their bodies.
What about adults?
Sex is used to sell everything from car tires to chewing gum. Super beautiful pictures and seductive voices inundate the visual and auditory cortexes from every form of media, including podcasts! Modern societies are inundated with sexually activating stimuli.
Basically, people ignore this stimuli but in a fundamental way the societies lift sexuality into higher areas of consciousness.
Naiveté is sweet, but many innocent people grow up thinking that sex is more important than it is, and spend a lot of time exploring their sexuality and trying to express themselves in sexual ways. In this world, with umpteen STD's just waiting around the corner, many of which are deadly, participating in sex that is not safe, is... not safe. Even though everyone knows abstinence is the safest for of sexual behavior, it is very hard to abstain, given the constant sexual stimulation in the society.
Masturbation is a form of safe sex. It releases the sexual tension and provides a person with a needed break from the irritation of unfulfilled sex drive. For a single individual, it can be, literally, a life saver. For a couple, it can satisfy their sexual needs without much loss in the way of intimacy.
As things are now, 1 in 4 sexually active people will get an STD, and many will die from it. Others will become sterile, or suffer other harmful effects. Being able to release sexual tension in a simple and safe way can be called a good thing. So, the answer is: yes, masturbation is good for you.
It should be noted that any good thing can be over used or abused. The spread of HIV through the actors in the P0RN industry is a perfect example.

Bilogically, yes it is. Masturbation relaxes you, plus it helps against prostate cancer.
Now, you must consider other views, like the religious point of view where it is considered a sin (Christians) since you are wasting the 'seeds' that God gave you to create life. From my point of view, there is nothing wrong since no kid between 12-16 would like to procreate, so, why would it be a waste?

I actually heard it on Leno that those who constantly masturbate, are less likely to develop prostate cancer when they're older. I would like to know where he got that study from.
