Between 18 and 20 hours.

There are two ways to do it:
Take I-57 and I-55 down to Memphis
At Memphis, take I-40 to Little Rock
At Little Rock, take I-30 to Dallas
At Dallas, south on I-35 to Austin
Distance: 1167 miles

Or head west on I-290 to I-88
Take I-88 across Illinois to Quad Cities
At Davenport, get on I-80 to Des Moines
At Des Moines, I-35 South
I-35 thru Kansas City and Wichita
I-35 south to Austin
Distance: 1267 miles

It's really just a question of where you want to eat ribs:
Kansas City or Memphis.
KC: Arthur Bryrants
Memphis: Rendevouz (near Peabody Hotel)

Okay...here's what I can attest to.
I'm in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
I've driven to Austin and I've driven to Chicago.

I've NOT driven the route you'll most likely take (see link for map).
Please note that you'll also miss a lot of the old Route 66 if you take the link route - if that interests you at all.
This way claims to be about 16+ hours.

Typically, (and when I follow the speed limit and there isn't too much construction), Tulsa-to-Dallas is about four hours...and Dallas-to-Austin is about four hours.

Tulsa-to-Chicago took me about ten hours.
Approximate time: 18 hours.

Count on:
1. construction;
2. weather delays;
3. bad drivers not moving out of the passing lane.

I'd suggest you either get a partner to help with the drive or at the very least, do an overnight somewhere in between.

About 16-20 hours, use a route taken by truck driver to avoid any hill or mountain roads that are not as suitable.

Truck Drivers use the easiest and best routes to get to their destination. Enjoy.....
