How can you identify a firefly during the day and are they out? Also, is there anything they are attracted to that will help you catch them?

Not all light producing fireflies come out in the day, so if you intend on catching the little bugs while the sun is shining, you probably won't get the luxury of enjoying their light at night. Try looking out for flashing lights in the sky (males) and flashing lights on vegetation (females).

Oh yes, and if you do bring a torch along, remember to turn it off. An additional light source interferes with the light signals that males produce to attract females. yearh, hunt for them on a moonless night too.

In most species of North American fireflies, during a certain time of night, males fly about flashing their species specific flash pattern. Females of the same species tend to be perched on vegetation, usually near the ground, and if a flashing male catches a female's fancy, she will respond at a fixed time delay after the last male's flash. A short flash dialogue may ensue between the male and female as the male locates her position and descends to mate . The courtship patterns of Japanese fireflies seem to show many variations of this type of communication system, as well as courtship behaviors that include pheromones as well as photic signals . It is generally assumed that most non-luminous North American fireflies locate mates through the use of pheromones.

Fireflies are a challenge finding in the daytime; most people wait till dark--when you can see them flickering light all around. To my knowledge, nothing really attracts the little guys to you like mosquitoes.....or worse.

You just have to have handy a plastic (or glass) jar, go to them and try catching them. Oh: be sure to poke a few air holes on top the jar lid; fireflies can't flicker light without air, otherwise they'll die.
