I think this would take a PhD thesis to answer, but I'll try it in a nutshell. ;-)

The arts are what make us human. They were all present back when man still lived in caves: storytelling, drawing, rhythm-making, crafts and dancing. If the education of tomorrow gets reduced to just what can be transmitted through a computer with students isolated from one another in their own private learning stations, then creativity will diminish and we will forget how to interact with real people. The arts are about people interacting with each other because they are a necessary form of communication. Without the arts, we may as well let robots and machines take over the planet.

society, and life in general, are mainly the artist's inspiration;
art, on the other hand, creates a safe free speech channel where frustraction, anger, depression and so on are released; if those feelings were kept inside, then individuals will probably turn to violence as an alternative to release them.
in my opinion, there is no atr without a society, and no society can exist without art....

i think that life imitates art and art imitates life!
