I've seen peoples motorcycles die on them in the streets. Their friends come over an they pushing the dead bike up to a good speed and the rider hits the switch and it starts. Does the bike need to be in neutral? And under what situations(bad battery, low gas) does this work?

An electric, or kick starter spins the motor over. Pushing a bike in gear does the same thing. Put the bike in second, clutch in, switch on, and push to a good speed. Pop the clutch while jumping on the seat so the rear wheel has some traction, and the motor should turn over enough to fire.

You can do the same thing with a car with a manual transmission.

Yes...you can push start a bike. And yes if you don't know what you're doing once it starts it will run away from you. Put it in a higher gear...2nd...3rd...and push the bike...when you've gained enough speed or run out of breath jump on the bike and let the clutch out. It'll probably start. If possible I'd find an incline some place and avoid the running start. But truth is just buy a new battery instead of milking the old one till you get into this situation.

They're not hitting the switch to start it. If you push a bike while in neutral, it's just going to roll.
Normally when the bike is running and you shift it in to gear, the motor makes the rear wheel turn. When you push start a bike, the bike is in gear and the clutch is pulled in, just like as if you're in neutral. The bike just rolls. When the clutch is let out, now the rear wheel turns the the motor. You're turning the motor with the rear wheel instead of the starter motor. Which won't spin the motor because the battery is dead.

THE ANSWER FROM PANKAKE IS GOOD. A LOW BATTERY WILL CAUSE THE BIKE NOT TO START WITH THE STARTER, BUT YOU MUST HAVE GAS, OR PUSH STARTING WONT HELP.

Well, if the key is in the ignition and the motorcycle is in gear it is going to run away from you and fall down some where, but then i guess you already knew that, or did you find out by experience and if did that boy you dumb!!!
