I am not racist in any way. But I am just furious that people are getting mad over a sign like that. I think they've gone too far, they've over-analyzed, for just a simple sign. Please explain to me your views, whether that sign is write or wrong to have up.

i agree with that sign 100%!! my father immigrated here (USA) from Italy, and he learned our language fast! and he refered to himself as an AMERICAN....not a ITALIAN/AMERICAN!! if i went to another country, would i expect ENGLISH to be an option, or free housing, or free medical care, or FREE ANYTHING???? i think not. if you want to go live in another country, learn to adapt. if you want the comforts and security of home....STAY THERE!!!

I don't see how it can be called "racist." It is not an issue of race -- it's an issue of language. That sign would apply to Italians, Swedes, and Germans who don't speak English. I think some ethnic groups cry "racism" so often that they no longer know what it means. I think the owner of the restaurant has every right to indicate that the employees speak only English. And therefore, customers should know that they won't be understood if they speak Portuguese or Swedish.

It is not racist in anyway. It applies to everyone equally, regardless of skin color aka "race".

Edward...reported. that was not an 'answer'. "polishup" should be 2 words not 1..

I have visited France. When I ordered, I HAD to order in french. (which I barely speak). Why should I believe the people I ordered from spoke English? They live in France. The National Language is French. I am visiting them. Why should I be mad if they ask me to order in french, since it is their language, and I am in their land??

Lester? What UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE do you speak?? There are soo many languages and dialects in the world. How would you judge which ones are worth speaking? Since it would be irrational to think most Americans can learn all the languages in the world. I can't imagine anyone thinking one language is better or more important than another. Would Spanish be more important to learn than German? Would Italian be more important to learn than Swahili? Do you REALLY believe we must cater to EVERYone's culture, heritage, and language when we have our own in this country?? What about the polygamists? Or people who come from countries where slavery or marrying young children is legal? Should we respect their beliefs, cultures, heritage, and language? Or should they try to assimilate to OUR society and culture? Which makes more sense??

I don't see what the controversy is. All they ask is that if you're going to order with words, use English. Obviously the owners of the store don't understand every single language, and since it's the USA, the orders should be done in English. They even said that they allowed customers to point at the product or use signs to order.

I think it is terrible. What is so great about America is that we all come from different places. Why do Americans want everyone to be the same once they get here? We should respect differences in people and that includes people who don't speak English.

i agree with you all immigrants should be able to speak English and those who cant has no business here if there not going to learn this language which i disagree with them letting them live here in the first place there taking our jobs away from us and ripping the gov. off and all americans who need help is getting turned down because of them i say send them all back to the country in which they came from and let us true americans go on with our lives the way we should

See what kind of service you get living in Mexico and speaking only English (or any European country, or just about anywhere else, for that matter). You live here, you speak the language. Period.
