I dont want to go thru each coin, it would take hours and hours. Would rather just sell the bag but want a fair price.

Well to answer your question of finding the worth of your coins, there are two ways (to my knowledge): do it yourself or ask another. By doing it yourself, you would purchase a book listing the prices of all the coins you own (whether strictly US coin or even coins from various nations). You could take the time to look up each coin hand by hand, but even then you might not know of the origin of the coin or may have a problem when looking it up. For this reason I would go the other way and ask another. The other would be a numismatic (a coin dealer). They are what financial analysts are to stocks. They can tell you where it came from and how much it is worth--for a price. The price paid for their service may be worth it because you would get a fair value for your coins. They might even offer to purchase them at a slight discount from fair value or even refer you to someone who would like to purchase them. Look up "numismatic" in the yellow pages to find local dealers.

The best is to take the time and catalog each coin, but if you don't have a trusted coin dealer in your area then just separate the coins into half pound bags and sell them on eBay. Tell this same story and start the bidding at .01 cents.

Most important take many pictures of the collection.

First sort them into piles of like coins with like dates and mint marks. Then go to this site and start doing your homework. The value of coins is greatly dependent on the condition that they are in. You will have to note which coins have less wear than others. If a coin has scratches or dings, it is worth very little unless it is very rare.

Your crazy if you sell them right now. You have to get a good coin collector book and go through them one by one. One coin might only be worth ten cents...but you could have a rare one worth hundreds. I think you dad would be very hurt if you just sold the bag. Hold on to them, I don't think you need the money that bad. Save them and give them to your kids when you have a family.

So there's old and rare coins in the bag? I would go to a coin collector and sell it.
