Basically, you're talking about building a cabinet on wheels. Look in the home and building supplies stores. You can find various items designed to help make rolling storage, and this is basically what a kitchen island is, except with a counter top.g All a cabinet is, if you study one throroughly, is a decorated box. Study the construction of the cabinets in various homes, apartments, etc., and figure out what you want, then try to build it. You'll make a few mistakes, but you'll learn a lot in the process.

Good luck.

I have done this a few times. I am a designer of custom Kitchens. Consider the weight of the proposed island. Consider the type of floor that you are going to want to roll across. Consider the type of caster you are thinking of using. If you divide the weight of the unit (loaded) by the number of casters (usually 4), you get an estimate of the weight that each caster will need to support. If you estimate the footprint of each caster(the area that is in contact with the floor at any moment), you can get an estimate of the load (lbs./sq. in.) on the floor. If your island will be heavier at one end, you need to work those numbers out, too. Here is a list of potential problems. Problem One: casters are overloaded and fail, damaging island cabinet, its contents, and the floor. Problem Two: the island is so heavy that it is difficult to move, and therefor, does not serve the purpose for which it was built. Problem Three: the floor is uneven (like a tile floor), preventing the island from operating as desired. Problem Four: the floor is too soft ( like some woods) and is marred by the casters' weight.

hate to say take out the fun and buy one, but what you can do is buy an island cabinet from lowes or home depot, assemble it, flip it over, put 2x4 braces across the 2 short points, drill holes on hte 4 corners inset half way over the 2x4 and drill holes for swivel casters, which you can also get at those stores..... all said and done it will be cheaper than making one if you dont know what your doing.... cabinetry isnt as easy as it looks.

My husband just built one for me out of an old table; He put shelves in it ,with sliding casters on the legs, (rollers were too unsteady ) and pegboard, (that stuff with all the little holes in it) to hang towels, lids etc. on
Works great, if you want a marble top, go to flea markets and find what you need, have it cut to size at a lumber yard.

Buy you 4 locking casters and install them on the bottom of the island. They need to be locking so your island won't move when you're using it. Check your local hardware store for the parts you'll need.

Consider making one out of an old desk..........with wheels. Go to a second-hand store, flea market or garage sale. The wheels you can get @ Lowe's, Home Depot or Menards.
