Many folks will point you at Dell and HP, but don't discount vendors like Toshiba, Acer, and Gateway, all of which may carry a lower pricing point. Also, if it is for your son to use for school, then Microsoft offers a discounted version of Office for Students for about $149. Good Luck

I would say Dell would be your best bet. Check out fatwallet.com for good coupons. You should be able to get a good laptop for about $400 which in pounds is what you are looking for.
As for 2003 office, you can buy the student edition and it is about $50 for just Office Word.

first off try this and see if your son likes it before you purchase any software http://www.openoffice.org
secondly, what are his main uses of the laptop? If it is for storing essays etc you really need to make sure that it comes with a writable DVD or CD to back up his work.
Dell are probably the best for your £ at mo , but by the time you do all the little add ons like extra memory, it can add up. Gateway have a bad reputation for some reason, but three programmers in my office swear by them http://www.gateway.com
have a look and consult with your son as to his needs.
Good luck

The good not perfect computers would be either HP or Dell: If your going to buy HP it's good for a few years maybe around 3-6 years you would start noticing the minor mechanical issues. For Dell it's a good deal for a computer but it's not as good as HP but it can last longer.

Difficult question... You need to look at what your son REALLY needs for the laptop to be totally useful...
Is it just for using Office on??? Or is he looking to use it for entertainment too???
You need to look at the specifications for all available laptops and whether you can get away with a second-hand or reconditioned on... But you are probably looking at £5-700...
And the Office software is not cheap either...
What about a printer??? Internet access??? CD/DVD Burning??? Pen Drive storage??? External Hard Drive??? Specialist software for his exams???
It all mounts up...

I would look at a Dell.. They have really good computers that last a long time, laptops and desktops. And they are relativly cheap like you said you wanted them to be.
Try the link below in the "Sources" spot.
