Pittsburgh!!! It has four definite seaons of weather! A small town feel with some of the best schools in the country. It is the 4th most visited city in the country for art reasons.
Kennywood amusement park is a great summer destination spot for kids of all ages. In the winter you can spend your time indoors at the Carnegie museum of natural history (home to the largest collection of dinosaur bones in the world). The Pittsburgh Children's Museum or the Carnegie Science Center (250 hands on exhibits as well as the UPMC Sports works that teaches kids about physics through fun sports activities) The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG aquarium are open year round and are just outside of downtown as well!
There are 3 pro sports teams and several minor league teams so there is always a sporting event to attend.
Little to no crime in the metropolitan area, minimal traffic, quiet suburbs, and a bustling downtown. What more could anyone ask for?

There are some excellent places in North Atlanta, some amazing neighborhoods. Since Atlanta is somewhat unique in regards to other cities (being so spread out), you can basically find whatever kind of area you want. North Atlanta is very small town homey feeling, south Atlanta is very ghetto/factory worker feeling, theres large Indian communities, Asian communities etc. But since Atlanta is so spread out you can live your entire life in one part without ever needing to venture into the others if you dont want to experience those things. Personally I would probably recommend the Roswell area (Holcomb Bridge/GA400), because there are some incredible communities where it feels like a gated community but isnt. The elementary school is located inside the community, kids can walk to school, outdoor playgrounds parks etc. All surrounded by (but invisible to) the big city feeling that jumps out at you if you leave the subdivision.

Just about anywhere in the midwest really. I grew up on a farm in Ohio that was only 20 mins outside of a city, so you have the privacy and safety of the country but also can get to a city if you need to.

Greenville, NC--College town, so good shopping and cultural experiences, lots of summer and afterschool activities, not big enough for gangs or big drug probs, 1hour from the beach, 90 min from big city, 5hrs from D.C., 6-8 hrs from mountains with great fall foliage, not so much snow though

Minnesota
-good schools
I live in Plymouth/Wayzata area and they have really good schools and the University of Minnesota is good too. It is safe. We are about a half hour away from Minneapolis and St. Paul. You could go to the Mall of America! It kinda depends on your budget. I have lived in Andover too, its nice there, so many options
