My kids got them from my folks when they were really little and they're almost grown up now and I'm curious to see how much the bonds are worth. How much time does it take for them to reach their face value, and don't they keep getting even more valuable than that?

How long it takes for them to peak depends on the type of bond. You can figure out the value of them here: http://wwws.publicdebt.treas.gov/BC/SBCPrice

They don't increase forever, at some point they will peak.

To give you an idea, I got them every year for my birthday. The oldest one is 22 years old and still hasn't peaked. Be prepared to wait.
