I had a similar problem. In my case, the DVD burner wouldn't read or write CD's, though DVD's worked. After days of contacting tech support, flashing the drive with new, or different firmware, trying different software, etc. I finally learned that these combo drives have one laser for DVD's and a different laser for the CD's. If one goes out, the other may still work. If the laser is the problem, no amount of software or firmware tinkering will help.
If the drive is new, return it. If the drive is still under warranty, ask for an exchange. Otherwise you're out of luck.

You don't describe what DVD disc your burner is trying to read....data? movie?
Based on what you said, I'd recommend that you determine what type of DVD/CD burner you have, meaning -R/RW or +R/RW, or perhaps both formats.
Another thing you might try is to go to the Device Manager in Windows, right click on the DVD/CD burner, and choose "Uninstall". Then re-boot, and Windows should find the drive as "new hardware", and re-install the correct drivers for it. Then try out the DVD capability again. Good luck.

You need to provide info about your burner and the DVD disc, and also what computer you have. If the disc is blank, then the burner might not read it.

One possible reason for this behaviour is that your DVD Disk and DVD Drive both will be of different region. Verify your DVD Drive Region and see on the DVD Disk to identify the Disk Region.
