I am not a gardner either, but would like some plants in pots around my door and sliding glass door. Could someone suggest the correct kind of plants for the Midwest and direct sunlight. I don't really care what they are, I would just like to putz and have something nice to look at. Thanks in advance.

I am in the same situation. Buy a large imitation pottery pot at Home Depot. Make sure it has a drainage hole and put a large plant saucer under it. Use plant soil that already has fertilizer in it like Miracle Grow. Press the soil down and fill almost to the top. Choose a color scheme like red, white and blue or purple, orange and white. Start in the middle with your tallest plant(s) like geraniums. Plant med. sized plant in a ring around that like marigolds or petunias. Use some plants that have colorful foliage like a lime plant. Next to the rim use plants that will spill over the sides or vine like millions bells, or verbena. Your local garden center will have lots of plants that thrive in your area. Water your pot every other day or more often if it is very hot. Water until the water comes through the drain hole into the saucer. Replace any plants that die or stop blooming as summer conditions change. Have fun with it.

Try some petunias or geraniums! Hanging baskets are nice too! you can purchase planters that actually sit on the rails of your balcony, and direct sunlight will enable you to grow just about anything. Make sure that pots placed on the cement have a catch tray, otherwise you;ll have some pissed neighbours.. from personal experience. When purchasing annuals, ask the staff at the garden centre for advice on the type of look your going for, they can recommend different varieties. Also monitor your levels of light through the day to ensure you don't waste money on annuals that aren't tolerant to the light available on your balcony.

I like to start with a dracaena - or spike plant in the middle, then higher plants like geraniums or petunias, then plants that flow over the edge of the pot and cascade like ivy or a trailing plant of some kind. Make it nice and thick and it'll look great...good luck.

any fake or artificial flower or plant will work. Look at McDonalds or BurgerKing, they have great looking plants and they don't need any care! You won't feel bad when they die because they never will!
