Do you think that Prince was one of the most influential pop music artist ,or not? I'd say yes, a lot of his 80's stuff is still popular.

Greatest? Yes. Influential? That's more difficult to say... my short answer would be yes, in that a lot of modern R&B takes from him (Outcast more obviously than many) and in that his frank approach to sexuality and religion in his songs has pervaded the mainstream in a significant way. Hundreds of people have covered his songs and often had big hits with them. For many 'auteurs', he is a great starting point as he is a one-man studio proficient in many instruments and incredibly prolific. He's also a model for people trying to work outside the 'big industry' music business...

But therein lies the rub... Because he's so publicly tried to work in the music industry in a non-traditional way, I think he's gotten a lot of bad press (and also because he's highly eccentric). The nineties were not kind to him and, though he was producing some of the best music of his career, he was pretty much a laughingstock in the press, to the point that a whole generation of people just saw him as a 'freak' and never considered his music. His current renaissance is a good thing and I think that within a few years you'll start to see him take his rightful place in the music industry. He is, after all, one of the greatest there is...

Peace (and b wild).

Prince? my God YES! his music is amazing to say the least! some 20 and more years after his so called "hay day" he is still appearing on shows like American Idol and good Morning America. And still blasting out the hits.

Don't get me started!

Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Lady Cab Driver, Darlin' Nikki, Beautiful One...................

And all those costumes, hair and make-up? He holds true to the 80's and still strong today!

I camped out over night and stood in line 15 hours to get tickets to his 1982 PURPLE RAIN concert. I still have the tee shirt!

And purple is still my favorite color. And have the old VHS Purple Rain.

And even have the old record where I heard that if you played Darlin' Nikki backward it has a message?

And it truly does...........

As well as I can remember it says...........

"Christ is coming"

So I love Prince to no end....................

I think Prince is great but I don't think he was that influential as no one really sounds like him today, then again I don't think anyone could really copy someone who can play about 30 instruments and has written songs as great as Purple Rain.
