Mike Shinoda was the one who started the band named Xero.
Xero was later renamed as Hybrid Theory.
But because of an issue wherein there was already another band named "hybrid theory," the band was again renamed as Linkin Park.
Although Mike Shinoda started the entire band, he was not the one who completed it. Chester Bennington got added to the lineup after several hard days' nights. In fact, Chester was the one who thought of the name "Linkin Park."
But nevertheless, Mike is the sticky adhesive that makes Linkin Park united--the man who "glues" together 6 different people from 6 different worlds having 6 different personalities shaped by 6 different influences.
Linkin Park became famous for the songs One Step Closer, Crawling, In the End, and of course, Numb/Encore with hiphop fame Jay-Z.
People have always "labelled" or "categorized" Linkin Park as rap-rock, nu-metal, rap-metal, alt-rock, modern-rock, pop-rock, whatnots. But in truth, Linkin Park breaks boundaries and cannot be just contained in one genre/category. It's more than just your average rock. It's organic (meaning the sounds are not just computer-generated but a combination of LIVE instruments and hand-played beats) and it combines not just two or three musical elements but several musical elements. It has rap/hiphop elements, rock elements of course, electronica elements, alternative elements, and various other elements.

On the other hand, Fort Minor is a sideproject of LP member and founder Mike Shinoda. You know, like a worker having a sideline or a part-time job. Mike really just wanted to go back to his roots, which is HipHop, and he wants to do hiphop in his own very organic way. Fort Minor is not an exact copy of Linkin Park. Fort Minor is organic hiphop, Linkin Park is organic rock.

But Mike has always made it clear that he did not and will not leave Linkin Park. What he actually just did was to take advantage of the semi-hiatus that Linkin Park got into. So while LP was resting and spending more time with loved ones, Mike grabbed his chance and worked on his sideproject which features friends from the hiphop music biz.
If there are people wondering about LP going into a "hibernation" period, well of course! The members of the band Linkin Park are also humans like us--they get fatigued, in fact OVER-fatigued, they need rest, and they have the right to rest. This was the reason why LP slid off the limelight for almost a year (although they did some performances randomly, such as the Live8 Concert, the MusicForRelief Concert, the Grammys, and some minor shows like the MySpace Anniversary Concert and the Club Tattoo Anniversary Show).

In other words, the link between LP and FM is Mike Shinoda!

yeeees there is ... read Fort Minor's bio:
In November 2005, LINKIN PARK co-founder Mike Shinoda debuted as a solo artist with Rising Tied, an ambitious collection credited to his alter ego, Fort Minor, that blended hip-hop with electronics and rock elements. The set was exec-produced by Jay-Z, who had previously collaborated with Shinoda and LINKIN PARK on 2004's Collision Course. Tied also featured plenty of guests like Common and John Legend, as well as newer artists from Shinoda's Machine Shop imprint. The album was a labor of love for the LINKIN PARK MC. Not only did he produce and mix it, but Shinoda played 99 percent of the instruments; did all the sequencing and programming; and wrote some very personal raps about his life, youth, and family. "Kenji" was a standout, exploring the experience of Japanese-American internees during World War II. The track featured recordings of Shinoda's relatives discussing their experiences in the camps. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide .
