I got my tattoo to remind me of my best friend when I moved towns (it was an unwanted move initially) - mainly because he was someone who kept me strong through the tough times so it seemed like a good idea to have something which reminded me of him. My tattoo is a Maori symbol (I'm in New Zealand), and also symbolises peace, growth and new beginnings - so it represents exactly how I was feeling at that specific time in my life. My tattoo is on my back and hidden under clothing so it's more of a personal thing for me than something I want to show off.

Hmm when I was 15 I thought it was a great idea to have some wierd guy give me a tattoo. I paid 180$ to get it fixed a couple months ago. And I just got moon and stars on the top of my foot for graduation. I just loved the idea of having a tattoo on my foot.

i got my angel wings 4 years ago. i was contemplating getting it for the longest time. and it was difficult to find the exact design. that is one day i found it, and it was on the back of a band's t-shirt. underneath it said "may angels lead you in" in the prior months of actually getting the tattoo, a close former classmate/friend of mine passed away. and i remembered that they used to enjoy the group called jimmy eat world, and coincidently the t-shirt (after some reasearch) was the same band. and this to me was a sign. so thats the reason i have my tattoo as a remembrance. i plan in the future to get a nautical compass star to place underneath the wings.

Didn't get it for the hell of it. Thought about it for a long time and made sure it's something that represented ME, not just a trendy stupid tattoo.

I have one of waves that goes around my ankle, to make me think of walking on the beach & another on the same ankle of a sea turtle (the bone is the shell) to remind me of a beautiful turtle I saw basking on the beach in Hawaii. It had only three legs, but it was perfect. I didn't get my first tattoo until I was in my late 40's. I don't regret it one little bit.

Although I really like crutnacker's answer, my tattoo really does have meaning. I got it right after 9/11!

i got my tattoo in san diego, ca, shortly after my husband and i moved there cuz he was stationed there with the marine corps. we lived just outside of downtown so we went there weekly. one night we were having a little party at our place and one of my hubbys buddies mentioned getting tattoos downtown. now u have to understand im terrified of needles and shots, bees etc. so i wasn't planning on getting one for myself. all 8 of us went downtown and all the guys got tattoos and a couple of their wives did too. i watched 5 people get tattoos before i decided i could live thru it, but by that time the place had to close so they asked me to come back in the morning. i made my appointment and i stayed up all night trying to decide what to get and where to get it and all the while trying to keep up the courage to actually get one. the next morning i had decided i wanted something with the moon and stars and something with a cat. i love animals and cats are my fav. and i love the night time. the next morning the artist and i decided on a nice look and i got it on the back of my left shoulder. i sat in that chair for an hour, which is nothing compared to some tattoo times, and i was so proud of myself when it was done because i didn't cry at all. (im a big cry baby when it comes to pain lol) the funny thing was i had a plane to catch a couple hours after i got the tattoo to visit my parents for a couple days in northern california. my mom got a small champagne glass tattooed on her ankle a couple yrs ago when she turned 42 and she always told me i wasn't allowed to get one till i was in my 40s either. well i was so excited i had to show her and the minute i did she was like "wow! i didnt know tatoos could be so pretty!" that was 2 yrs. ago and i still love and get compliments on my tattoo of a black cat with a green collar and gold eyes sitting in a crescent moon with 3 stars, one green, one blue, one yellow above and a smokey cloud entertwined with it. so i got the tattoo for the hell of it, but it has become a part of me somehow and it means more than i thought it ever would to me now! thanks for taking me down memory lane! lol =)

I have two frogs. One is floating in the water and the other is a tree frog on a bamboo stick. I got the frogs because I love frogs a lot. I have liked frogs since the fifth grad after doing a report about them. The frogs remind me of fifth grade and just childhood in general.

My first tattoo I got with my wife. We both got the word "meleth", meaning "love" in Sindarin, an elvish language from Lord of the Rings. I got mine on my chest; hers is on her left shoulder. They're very simply done in black in a Tolkien script. Yes, we're total dorks, but we're dorks madly in love with each other, and a love of Tolkien is one thing we share. So we thought we would express that physically as a symbol of ourselves.
