A rated movie has been submitted to the MPAA and received a rating. An unrated movie, in the traditional sense, has not. It has been done to avoid the dreaded NC-17 (previously X) which can lead to you not getting advertisements in certain newspapers.

These days, though, it seems to mean naughtier scenes shot specifically for the purpose of shoving them onto the DVD, including gratuitous nudity, language, and sometimes, violence.

In many cases (40 Year Old Virgin), this actually can make the movie worse.

a rated movie are movies w/c are rated by some sort of judges and an unrated movie are movies w/c are not yet/ not rated by judges coz' of something.

rated means it has been seen by like the government or something and the government or something has graded it and unrated means the opposite

they're not sure what to rate it until it's been previewed and they know who it upsets and then they rate
