When I click [Place volume icon in the taskbar] Windows says the volume control program has not been installed. To install it, add/remove programs in control panel. HOW DO I DO THIS. WHAT ARE THE STEPS.

Are you going to: Start/Control Panel/Sound and Audio Devices/under Volume Tab: Show Volume icon in taskbar...or under Category View: Start/Control Panel/Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices/Sounds and Audio Devices/ under Volume Tab: Place Volume Icon in Taskbar?

Assuming you're on XP:OK, I've got it for ya :0 Click on the desktop and then hit F1. Windows help opens, type in "notification area" into the search, hit enter and in the results click on "Add the volume icon to notification area" - follow the instructions and there you are. But NO! If you get a message that says "Ya can't do this because the volume control program" isn't installed - you need to go to this article http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=319095 and follow instructions carefully. PHEW this one was challenging, and in the process I discovered that my own volume control isn't there either.
This is just the kind of thing that NEVER happened when I had a MAC! Too bad I can't afford one now WAAAAAAAAA!

Check to see if it's checked to appear in the task bar. If so, uncheck it, apply, ok (whatever the order is). Then re-check it, etc. If that doesn't work, do a system restore to a previous time/date. I had to do all of the above as that happened to me too.

That happens to my computer sometimes, and all I do is restart it.
