Electronegativity values are a good indication although there is a huge grey area with defining the type of bonding this way...
Li = 1.0, I = 2.5

The greater the difference, the more ionic the bond, the 1.5 difference here is a sign this is definitely on the ionic side.

Na + I --> NaI

It is an ionic bond because sodium gives away its one valence electron to iodine. As a result they both have full outer energy levels.
