In this forum, you read things all the time like: "I'm a Christian, but I want to divorce my husband" "I'm a Christian, how do I end an affair?" "I'm a Christian, but I want to leave my marriage for another"
I could go on and on.
Do people that hide behind this bug you? lose all credibility with you? make you feel sorry for them? How does it make you feel?
If you use this line of reasoning, explain yourself.
If you believe in Christianity, does it bother you that people use it as an excuse or defense mechanism?

I can see why you feel this way. I am a Christian but the ones who say they are Christians are they using it as a name tag or are they really saved or not and living the walk instead of just talking the talk? People should not hide the fact that they are Christians or saved either for that matter. But we have to understand as Christians or saved people that sometimes the only Jesus people see is us! Are we doing and living the way Jesus would and treating others the way he would have .... WWJD What would Jesus do is something to ask ourselves before doing anything that may be questionable in God's eyes. Do we treat others the way Jesus would? Sorry I am rambling on here so i will get off my soap box now lol. Sorry! Real Christians should not have affairs either or ever. But we are not perfect either and can slip up and make mistakes and err but we need to get out of it and ask for forgiveness from God and move on and not live any longer that way ! God hates divorce and adultery!

I don't think people necessarily use being a Christian as an excuse. But by being a Christian, as with any other religion, there are certain things you live by - one being whats in the Bible. So if something conflicts with the Bible then you are left with a big dilemma. For instance, people wanting to get a divorce - the Bible and the church don't approve of divorce (except in certain circumstances like abuse or infidelity). So people who live a certain way may feel torn when it comes to certain things.

I really just wish that people would use their own mind. People who say "I'm a Christian, but I want a divorce" seem to just follow a bunch of rules. I am a Christian, but if I was in a marriage that I wasn't happy in, then I don't think that God would want me to stay in it. What also annoys me is that people think "Oh no - I'll be breaking a rule by getting a divorce", but then they don't realize that people break rules all the time! We are human! The main thing is just to follow Jesus' teachings - love one another, etc. I don't think He wants us to be his robots who just follow all his rules - I think He want us to make decisions we believe in, and that follow his basic teachings of loving one another.

I don't see it as an excuse...I see it as instant clarification...as in "It's against everything I believe in and subscribe to...but..."
And by saying it, they are obviously showing that they are REALLY struggling with it - struggling with knowing that what they are doing is against God's desire for their lives.
I feel sorry for them but I would feel for anyone going through a tough time.
Christians aren't perfect and make horrible, destructive decisions just like non-christians do.
Maybe by labeling themselves as Christians they know they'll get the "punishment" (verbal) that they think the deserve.

That excuse does not stand the test.If a person claims to be a Christian than everyone expects a higher standard from them.
I would like to tell that person that they made their bed now live in it.

Christains are humans too. It's hard to try to do everything right all the time. So, I think that it's just a way for other people to relate when stating it.

It makes me wonder if they are true Christians. But that is not for me to judge or decide. But yes it is kinda bothersome.

add another one to that list:
"I'm a Christian, and it pisses me off when people hide behind the fact that they are."
