consisting of 3 different economics classes, 4 different mathematics classes, and 2 different history classes. If the student must select exactly one class from each subject area, how many different schedules are possible? (assume that there are no time conflicts)

the answer is 3 x 4 x 2 = 24

The person can pick 3 diff economics class but from there she can choose 4 diff math classes, so for each math class there are 4 other varables she can choose from. So there are 3 x 4 =
12 chocies she can do with the first 2 sets of choices. With the extra history ones the answer is double because there are now twice has many outcomes.

Use combinations

(3!/1!2!)(4!/1!3!)(2!/1!1!) = 3*4*2 = 24 ways using the counting principle.
