I have red legs, blue leg, scarlet leg, halloween leg, zebra leg and blue knee hermit crabs in my tank, and they are a lot of fun to watch. They ignore the other marine fish, but will occasionally kill and eat a snail and will pick on the horseshoe crab after it molts so much that I usually have to separate it for the first week while it's shell hardens. They also beat each other up.

Hello.. some of the above people are getting Land Hermit Crabs Confused with Marine Hermit Crabs.. they are similar but one lives in a tropical land environment (land Hermit Crab) and the other lives in a tropical marine underwater environment, which is the type you are asking about.

Marine Hermit Crabs are one of the best tank cleaners, theya re scavengers eating anything that is laying on the bottom part of the tank even within the sand. Just like in nature if they find a sick or dieing fish or other marine invert.. then yes he may decide to chow down BUT in the majority of the time they are NOT Killers or Predators BUT scavengers, eating discarded food, algae, fecal matter and other goodies.. they will also eat another fish or animal that is dead in the tank, normally close to the substrate level.

Other good cleaners are snails, shrimp, star fish, lobsters etc. they are the garbage men and cleaning crews of the underwater marine world...in fact they help a great deal with the upkeep of reef tanks and similar salt water set-ups because their full time job is cleaning and scavaging for wated food etc. They also come in a variety of sizes from tiny micro guys to fairly large ones about the size of land hermits.

Remember they are like the land variety they will molt and shed their exo and also eat it. If your tank is fairly clean on it's own and worry about your marine hermits having enough food, I would suggest to offer him some tasty treats... they have things for them specifically or you can drop some chunks of shrimp or similar things for them to eat.

I hope some of that helps you. I wouldnt worry about fish with them... they should be fine. If they are getting aggressive they may not be getting enough of the good stuff to eat and then you may need to supliment their diet because aggression is not natural with either type of Hermit Crab.. means they need more protein.

No it would drown. They can only survive under water for a certain amount of time.

If you want a water crab, try a red clawed crab.
