The CIA attempted to assassinate him (with poisoned toothpaste--how high tech), but failed. He had gone to the Soviet Union for help in fighting his enemies. The CIA didn't want a Soviet Union ally.

I don't know. Some believe they were involved with the Mafia in the plot to assassinate John F. Kennedy and alot of evidence is out there to prove it. Kennedy wanted to make them less powerful and they did not like it.
