What is the point of buying a horse? I want to buy one, but I guess you could say my thought is being sort of clouded by all the money it's going to cost. I know they're wonderful companions and can be very gentle and kind, but I just don't know.

Also, what are some ways to save money on horse things?

I appreciate all of your answers, but just to clarify, I do understand that horses are not gentle and kind all the time. They are large, strong animals that need to be well-trained and even then, there are obvious risks involved.

Better question... would $600 a month be enough to care for a horse if boarding was $250 a month, feed included?

i shouldn't be quick to judge, because i don't know u, but u don't sound ready to buy a horse. i think you should take some lessons first, because if u are describing them as "gentle and kind and great companions," u may need to do some research. just my opinion. :)

If you don't know if you really want your own horse you shouldn't buy one. Having your own horse lets you form a bond with that horse. It makes riding safer for you. You can also ride anytime that you want and always have the same horse to go out on a lot of time that makes you feel safer as you will know him well. You can save money by buying used tack just check it over well for wear. There are also tack auctions where you can buy used and new tack. Also ask the person you buy your horse from they may have some supplies they would be willing to sell.

I have a horse and space and money to keep her. I live 2 miles from a pub through bush trails but 5 miles by road. When I go to the pub at night I ride my horse and tie her to a tree. I can get as drunk as I like, climb on and she takes me home, No problem of drunk driving. She's cheap at the price.

I'd wait a while to get a horse. I think you should save up your money. Having horses is a big responsibility. It's also really rewarding having a horse. I'd really think about getting a horse. I have horses and I love having them but it's hard paying for the vet bills, feed bills, and farrier bills. I'm not trying to scare you. I'd just really think about getting a horse.

people buy horses because they love them and want to spend time with them. if its not something that you love that much it may not be worth your time and money to buy one. you might try a lease for six months and see how it is to have a horse first. horses take alot of money and time to keep up with and i spend it gladly because its my passion, but i wouldnt find it very fun to be shelling out $300 a month and going to the stable all the time if i didnt. btw, ebay sells some nice horse gear for great prices.

Don't buy a horse if your worried about money. Think of the vet bills, feeding costs, fencing, ferriers, equipment, etc....
