This depends on the size of the garden and if it's in a back yard or apartment. If it's a house make it w/ boarders from a home improvement store. Depending on the size you want it to be, a good selection would be Tomatoes, Green beans, Peppers(red, Green,Yellow) Lettuce.Remember to fence it and water and weed daily. Use plant or vegetable food per directions.Turn soil around to give the plant air but be careful not to touch the plant of your choice. Keep it simple, but fun. If it's for a flower bed go with a seasonal plant of different sizes, shapes, and colors. If it's for an Apartment use pots for seasonings and spices. You can also do the same with the vegetables and plants as long as they get the proper light and water w/food. Go to the library(take the kids) and let them pick out with you all the books you need or let them help to go on the computer. Also let them be involved as much as possible. Good Luck and Happy Planting!!!!!!!!!

I let my kids plant an annual garden every year. We keep moving it around the yard :-) We love Cosmo's they are real pretty and Zienna's. Both grow well with very little up keep besides some watering. We use broken up concrete as the border, I lay down a little landscape fabric & a couple bags of cheap dirt & we plant the seeds.

if i were you i would do all of the hard part first, like tilling a removal of weeds and grass.then put some peat moss and mix with the dirt, then i would call or go to the local nursery and ask them what kind of vegetables or flowers are suitable and easy enough, and hearty enough for kids to grow.take your kids with you so they can do the actual picking out of the plants or seeds!actually the seeds would teach them a little about how plants start off.so some of both would be good for them!make sure that if you plant flowers that they arent poisonous for children.with every plant you plant put down 2 hand fuls of miracle grow potting soil,it feeds the plants.veggies would be great for them to grow, that way they could harvest them also!it might even get them to eat more veggies!

Use one of those little plastic pools, it works great!
Marigolds are good, easy for them to collect seeds for next year.
Sunflowers are fun too, there are so many varieties & they can put the seeds out for the birds.
Pumpkins & zuchini are easy to grow too.
You can get a packet of "childrens garden" seeds which have a good selection of fun flowers too.

First, you let THEM build it. Hoe, weed, etc.
Home Depot, Wal-Mart, for plants or vegetables, let the kids pick. Start with a few first and see if they are going to tend it. Don't YOU tend it, or it won't be their garden.
If you make them (or let them), do all the hoeing, I bet you won't have too many of them interested for long, you think?

Depends on the size - Veggies are fun because you can eat them. Too late for strawberries probably, but they come back every year.
Plant annuals and perennials so they know there is a difference.
