It was the buck or male snorting. There is usually one buck with several does and he snorts at them to alert them to possible danger.

Snorts and grunts are part of their vocabulary- i have also heard a doe vocalize a sound that sounded like a crow calling but had an m sound at he beginnig instead of the hard c - at the time I interpreted it to mean "look out kids its a man with a gun!"

its either that they feel threatened by your presence or the presence of a predator, or they are mating calls it is mating season for most animals
