I'm 20 and my parents were, and still are, that way. It's mainly because they don't understand that guys and girls can just be FRIENDS without having anything else going on, especially when you're dating other people. It's the way they were brought up and the way they've lived their lives basically and i'm sure your mom is the same way. Other reasons are probably masculin/feminine crap. Hang in there...if you want to be her friend, don't let anyone change your mimd...it's PERFECTLY OKAY.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a girl as your best friend! The “make-up” of a best friend should never be determined by gender or age. A best friend is much more that just a person, it’s someone you are able to talk to about anything and everything and someone who will never judge or think ill of you no matter what.
So many people go through life never experiencing what it’s like to have a best friend. We wouldn’t be such a society of therapists and physiologists if we all had somebody in life to confide in and bounce things off of. There are more people than you can imagine that never even have friends, let alone best friends. It’s sad but true. So, consider yourself lucky that you have a best friend.
To credit your mom a little, let me say though:
The “coming of age” years start around 15 which is also the time where parents start to notice new things about their children and see their personality change in to adults. We get more alert and attentive to the new sexual side that children develop. In most parents it generates uneasiness since it’s a part of your personality that we aren’t in control off the same way we have controlled most things about you your whole life. We associate sex with something only adults “are supposed to do” and fear that should you venture in to that world, you wouldn’t know how to navigate around on your own. We fear that worst case scenario, you’ll jeopardize your future by getting a girl pregnant and be forced to kiss college goodbye in order to work and support a family.
Just keep that in mind and remember that she most likely only wants what she feels is best for you. She loves you.
Good luck.

I suspect that's just the generational differences between your mother and you showing up. In her day, there were only two reasons a boy and girl hung around together: either they were "going steady" and probably going to get married later, or they were "doing the nasty." Now, things are a bit more relaxed and it's not unusual at all to have friends of the opposite sex. Be kind to her; she's just concerned that you might do something you might later regret. :)

well, maybe she is scared that it is more than a friendship or that u might get hurt in a way. i guess u can try talking to her and seeing what really bothers her about ur friendship. i think it's completely normal to have a girl for a best friend. my best friend is a guy and i would not change it for anything in the world.

I have to agree with you. My best friend growing up and still my good friend to this day was a guy. My family wasn't thrilled we were best friends - but when they realized we were just friends and that we weren't screwing around everyone was cool with it - people started viewing us as brother and sister instead of boyfriend/girlfriend.
Talk to your mom and let her know you guys are just friends and aren't screwing around. It is possible for a guy and a girl to be just friends - I know because it happened in my life.

Well, I hate to say this, BUT she is your mom and you are 16. When you turn 18 it'll be a diff story, but until you are 18 it goes back to she is your mom.
