If any of you know where Smith Lake is In Alabama. We were sitting on our boat deck, and we saw some huge long animal looking thing swimming near our dock, then it went under. and we saw it peak up again farther away. Do you know what it could be. It wasnt a fish...No Snake...Do you know what other animals live in that water?

Probably a River Otter... The can get pretty big and would look long if it was stretched out swimming.
Did it look like it was playing with something? They are really fun to watch.

OH, WOW! You must have seen an alligator! He was probably peeking those eyes up just above the water, looking for prey, but your smell/look/presence at all surprised him and he swam off somewhere else. They can be hard to spot in the water. At night, you can see the eyes glow sometimes, but in the day you are more likely to see a big shadow at most- as you did. It's facinating- crocodiles in africa are almost invisibe, a young water buffalo, gazelle, or some other thirsty animal comes up to drink and WHAM!, gruesome. The American Alligator, alligator mississippiensis, mainly feeds on fish, turtles, and small mammals but will take almost any meat, and they have been known expand their choice of prey to include small dogs and other pets.

It's a good thing you did not poke it or anything-they really aren't the kindest animals. Still, WONDERFUL find.
