Society? Culture? Biology? You pick.
These are theories that state that evolution made us this way. Men used to hunt, while women used to gather.
There are also theories that because the ideal for each sex in our soceity is different, we only have interests that will bring us closer to that ideal. For example, women often want beauty and power while men often seek money and security.
These differences have a big effect on our communication. Some information that you tell a man about shopping or a family affair might go in one ear and out the other, where as if you ask him last year's sports scores or the latest video game codes, he'll ramble them off within seconds.
Someone mentioned the "Women Are From Venus, Men Are From Mars" book which is actually a pretty good book. I think it could answer your question really easily. It could also make it easier for you to find compromises for communication. I posted an Amazon link for it, although many libraries have copies too.

Think about it dearie, would you REALLY want us to be the same? I mean, ones sexual identity is the single biggest factor in ones identity overall. If it were reduced to a trivial difference, mentally speaking, how would we have the advantage of real partnership we currently have? We'd be competing with one another instead of working together, always trying to power-trip one another . . . oh, wait, this is beginning to sound like a modern PC marriage, isn't it?

Exactly!!! When a woman tells a man one of her problems, the man thinks she is looking for a solution. Many times the woman just wants a loving person to listen and try to understand. She isn't looking for a "fix it" man. She is looking for compassion. Guys, IT IS SO SIMPLE!!!!!
