I go to th 99 cent store & buy calcium, lime & rust remover for coffee pots. It works better than the kind for toilets! The trick is to remove the water from the bowl BEFORE applying the product. I like to turn off the water beneath the toilet, flush, then apply the cleaner & allow it to set for at least 15 minutes. If the stains are still visable, squirt some more on. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 applications to get it sparkling clean! So, buy 2 bottles for the first cleaning, in case you need more. When the bowl is clean, I turn the water back on, & let the tank fill, then flush the toxic waste down the sewer without ever having to use my hands to scrub!

There are two approaches to cleaning a toilet, as there are for any kind of cleaning. There's cleaning for appearance, in other words, cleaning when something appears dirty. Then there is cleaning for health, which is a higher level of cleaning.

It's best to clean stains away frequently. If they are allowed to penetrate the surface, they become more difficult to remove. Try different products to find the one which works best for you. However, DO NOT MIX different products. The resultant chemical reaction can be toxic to you. Follow the direction on the label.

Put on gloves. Lower the waterline in the toilet by quickly dumping a bucket of water in it. This trips the flushing mechanism but does not refill the bowl. (Or you can turn off the water and flush the toilet. Remember to turn the water back on when you are finished cleaning.) Then use the cleaner. Grab the toilet brush. You will have to scrub a little although the chemicals do most of the work. A scrubbing block you can purchase at Walmart works best for scrubbing called Pure Clean Bathroom Block.

Weak acids work for many problems but take a long time to react. Coke has phosphoric acid. Allegedly, Tang powdered drink mix also works because of the citric acid. The tablets like Polident used for dentures also supposedly work. Oranges (citric acid) and peroxide works. Mix in the bowl vinegar (acetic acid) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or borax. Many products claim to clearn hard water stains. Many people like Clorox with Teflon, Kaboom thick liquid, Sno Bol thick liquid or Don Aslett's Safety foam. Also CLR or Lime Away work fairly well. Janitorial supply stores carry low cost cleaners that work well but are not advertised commercially.

Because of the hard water stains you may need to use sequestrants and stronger acids. Open the bathroom window and door when using these cleaners. Consider setting up a fan. You need good ventillation when working with cleaners. Try TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) available at some hardware stores. Muriatic acid works for nasty toilets but it has fumes and will damage carpets so be careful. All acids damage the surface of the vitreous china. Most chemical cleaners contain hydrochloric, sulfamic and oxalic acids. So do not leave them in the bowl a very long time and after cleaning consider applying a silicone sealant.
Calcium and magnesium in water leave hard deposits -- called lime scales -- on fixtures and equipment. These minerals make cleaning products less effective. To clean away lime scale, you need a cleaning product with "sequestrants." Sequestrants capture and deactivate minerals in water. (Calgon is one example of a product with sequestrants.) The deactivated minerals then cannot react with other materials to form scum, film, or lime scale.

You can put a bleach tablet in the tank to reduce some of the discoloration but if you leave it in the tank it will damage the rubber parts and if you have pets that drink from the toilet it will make them sick.

Then you can seal the surface with a silicone sealant. Also after you have cleaned the shower and tub. Seal it.

Be careful of what you use to clean the shower and tub if it is made of fiberglass or plastic and not ceramic tile. Acids will severely damage the surface.

The steam cleaning machines kill most germs but you will have trouble with the hard water. Lysol kills germs but leaves an unpleasant odor.

Um, I don't think you can clean anything without scrubbing, unless you use something high in acid and that will destroy the toilet. Don't be lazy. A little scrubbing never hurt anyone.

The best toilet cleaner I have used that gave me the least amount of scrubbing and didn't damage the toilet was toilet duck. I really like that stuff.
