There are two different phrases that can be used differently and whose meanings can be understood by many on the mental and intelectual level, but challenging on the much more emotional and inner level of the heart, mind, body and soul: "Truth will set you free" and "Love will set you free."
"Love will set you free"... I think that's the old saying that came from the times when-back-then... It has different meanings to anyone, and everyone sees the answer differently. It's a promise that will come true for those who wait.
I believe the meaning for this promise is that when you love someone so much that it takes your breath away, their love will set you free in the way that you no longer will feel like you're trapped by the world around you or even by your mind that would keep second-guessing everything that you're feeling. In other words you won't feel like you're chained down to one spot and can't make any decisions. This is the moment when you love with your heart and see the person from the inside, loving them for who they are regardless of the physical differences (race, color, height/weight). You'll feel like you're walking on clouds and it's so easy to love the other back that you don't know how anyone can't do the same thing, and your heart and soul can finally have a chance to be happy and love him/her freely without even holding back. At this moment, you can be honest with one another and never worry about what the other person is thinking, because you'll feel like you can read each other's minds without even saying a word.
"Love will set you free"... It's challenging to achieve it in the modern world where everyone has so many opinions and at times don't care about this or that, that they completely forget to follow their heart and find the truth from the inside and out, and not the other way around. It is challenging, yes... but it's not literally impossible. You just have to give it a chance to grow, nurture it through good times and bad times, and see it blossom in from of your eyes. The love of the other and your own feelings for the person will set you free in the ways that you'll feel like you've never felt before. Go with your heart and your gut instinct that will always tell you the truth right away, but in the same time don't be blinded by the modern world's opinions about what you're feeling and/or how you're supposed to feel about him/her. Otherwise, it'll be challenging to work it out.

That line usually implies that you need see what your partner's level of comfort is. For instance, if he/she is comfortable being "just friends" then that is probably where you will need to leave it, no matter what your internal feelings may say. Going against your feelings embodies the "letting go" statement. Since relationships require two people, if she/he does not feel the same as you do, then it cant last. Even if they come back, if the feelings are not at least somewhat mutal then that relationship is more likely to end than last. Time heals all wounds. I experienced the same emotions but eventually got over it. Even though I am in a fully commited relationship now, I still wonder about her. But since I have a high self esteem, I always end up knowing it was her loss not mine.

I believe love will set you free means that when you meet that one person or even family, etc.... you will feel more free in the sense that you will feel like you are being loved and you can be free to trust those people instead of hold everything inside. You get to share your good and bad times. Isn't that why everyone looks for love. Freedom to lean on someone instead of keeping it in to yourself.

I think you are mistaken. The phrase you are thinking of it 'the truth will set you free. All that means is that if you hold a secret in too long, it will eventually eat away at you and letting the truth be known will set your conscience free.

Every human being to some extent or another needs love to function at their true potential. Especially to push on through setbacks and dissapointments. With love you can find the motivation to push yourself more, whether through you love for someone else, and you're trying to do something to help them; or that someone else believes in you more than you believe in yourself and your potential.
