If I had to define it, I'd say that a generalization has some basis in fact, while a stereotype is just an image with a lot less truth value.

"Dumb Blond" is a stereotype.
WASP is a stereotype.

But to say that most teenagers like to drive cars, is probably just a fairly true generalization.
