Get the latest versions of “spybot search and destroy” and “ad-aware” from downloads.com. (If you were my customer, I’d have you download them more quickly from one of my servers). Then install them. Then update to the latest versions of them. Then run the “immunize” function from within “spybot”. Then empty your trash can. Install and run “crap cleaner” from http://www.ccleaner.com . Then run a full scan with the spybot and ad-aware programs. Update your virus-scanner to the latest version. If you do not have a virus scanner, get a free non-commercial version from http://free.grisoft.com – it does a decent job and doesn’t cost anything. Make sure and run a full scan with your virus-scanner too. When anything is found, fix/remove it and restart your computer. Following the above should greatly improve your internet speed, computer response time and data security.
For more information, please see the “Computer Repair/Technical Support” link on http://www.jsh.biz/ . Have a pen and paper ready because he’ll give you all of the instructions that you need in less than 10 minutes to try and keep your costs down to under $10. I think that’s a pretty good deal to get all of that info for less than $10. Or you can get a printed version from the same page for $20.

I'd go with AVG and as an aside for Shark.... deleting the files in the virus vault does exactly that...deletes them, gone.... if you're getting infections back you're doing something wrong
ADDED: Snowys answer was good.... didnt answer this question at all, but it was certainly good......

AVG is one of the best consumer products they have amazing reviews and I use it. I have only had one problem. If you delete the virus vault all the viruses will get out and destroy your computer. i have never heard of avast anti virus so it probably isn't as good especially if big name companies don't use it probably isn't as good, just my opinion.
