In my fading memory, I seem to remember that it has something to do with Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where we are holding the Iraqi prisoners in concentration camps! The song describes the beauty of the area, with the palm trees swaying. "I am a sincere man from the land of palms"--"Yo soy un hombre sincero, de donde crece las palmas". I hope I haven't "aborted" either language too much, but that is my recollection. I cannot remember what "guajira" means, sorry.
Hey, I found a website with the lyrics in Spanish and in English! Try: www.arlo.net/lyrics/guantanamera.shtml
It translates the whole song! Good luck!
www.arlo.net/lyrics/guantanamera.shtml Sorry, Yahoo cut it off!
Okay, one more time from guantanamera:
guantanamera.shtml
Why does Yahoo SUCK so much??!!
I just found out: "guajira" is simply, "a Spanish folk song". From the Spanish/English web site!
Finally I found out also: "Guantanamera" is actually "a girl from Guantanamo"!
Whew, at last!! Sorry it took a while!!

Hola, novia de Luis Miguel.
Guantanamera is a woman from Guantánamo, Cuba. Guajira is a woman from a the Guajira region that is right in the border of Colombia and Venezuela. However, I do not know what it has to do with the song.
Muy bien día, mi amiga.

Guantanamera--as I was informed by a South American lady--means Guantanamo girl. Guajira, which is linked to Guantanamera, in the song, means dark-skinned. As the lady was fluent in South American Spanish, I had no reason to doubt her.
