I use peat moss on top of potted plants as a mulch.
It is great material to add air and a moisture retentive to the soil.
You are fortunate to have enough to use on your lawn but it needs to be in the soil to do you any good.

If you are going to spread it on the lawn, I would make sure that it is chopped fine enough to sink in. It will help your soild and maintain water.

Peat moss lets moisture remain in the soil without drowning the roots of the plants. It basically improves the underground environment.
