Actually, the first true World Series was in 1903, when the Pirates played the Red Sox. Before that, starting about 1885 or so, there were occasional 'championship' series that were really challenge matches (one owner challeneged the other) played as exhibition matches after the season. The two teams would travel around the country putting on exhibition games.

The World Series as we know it (best of series to determine the best team in both the AL & the NL) was 1903, not any earlier.

I think the year was 1903 and I found out an interesting tid-bit of information; the World Series got its name because a baseball tournement sponsered by the New York Worl newspaper.
