Faust, or Faustus, was a german scholar said to have played with the dark arts and sold his soul to the devil. Many plays, operas, and novels have been written on his story. If I only had the chance to read one work, which should it be? Would I be able to get an English copy?

Goethe. There have been a number of English translations. I have the Walter Kaufman translation with the German text on the left-hand page, and I like it. Having the original German is interesting, even though my grasp of the language is limited. You can see how Kaufman attempts to preserve Goethe's meter and rhyme.
